ABOUT

Mao Sone is a Tokyo-based pianist-trumpeter, composer, and bandleader whose work moves fluidly between virtuosic jazz improvisation, cinematic composition, and large-ensemble writing.

A graduate of Berklee College of Music, where he completed both his undergraduate and master’s degrees with top honors, Sone gained international recognition after winning the International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition and receiving the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award. He was also selected as a semifinalist in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

He has released several acclaimed recordings, including Infinite Creature, Brightness of the Lives, and Plays Standards. In 2025, he released Eight Little Pieces, a large-ensemble work reflecting his expanding compositional voice.

Beyond the jazz stage, his work extends to film and media. He served as piano supervisor and composer for the Netflix series Beyond Goodbye and performed at the opening ceremony of Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai.
