MAOSHO (Jazz! Shamisen!)

MAOSHO is a groundbreaking cross-cultural project formed by Sho Asano, a young virtuoso of the traditional Japanese Tsugaru Shamisen, and Mao Sone, an internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and trumpeter. Positioned at the vibrant intersection of jazz, Japanese traditional music, and world rhythms, the duo crafts a completely unique sonic identity by fusing ancestral folk melodies with contemporary, cutting-edge improvisation.

Launched in 2025, MAOSHO made an immediate splash with their debut single Komebushi / HIBIKI, released via major label Avex, with HIBIKI selected as the Autumn theme song for MBS’s weather report program. That same year, they made their stunning international debut in New York City, earning a rapturous standing ovation and solidifying their reputation as a premier East-meets-West global ensemble.

In July 2026, the duo released their passionate reimagining of Yagibushi, a live track recorded in New York featuring Grammy-winning percussionist Keita Ogawa. Driven by a philosophy of "delivering music that can only be born in Japan, rather than simply exporting what already exists," this fiery rendition infuses the raw, festive energy of summer Bon Odori dance with bold Latin jazz rhythms, capturing listeners worldwide.
